These two pups are hanging their heads in despair, These two pups are hanging their heads in despair, aka shame, as my deadline approaches and I do anything possible but edit. That includes: watching Pitch Perfect while scrolling YouTube for videos of Hayley Westenra; playing half-finished games of Zen Match; opening yet not eating bags of bbq chips/chocolate; walking outside like I’m going to throw Lila’s ball but look for snails instead…and the list goes on. Focus, for me, has clearly left the building. #amwriting #amediting #bookstagram #books #yabooksofinstagram #authorsofinstagram #writerslife #sendghosteditor #frenchiesofinstagram #rescuedogsofinstagram

I’m half-way through this novel about an America I’m half-way through this novel about an American family with ten boys, six of whom were diagnosed with schizophrenia. It’s a gut-wrenching tale of one family’s struggles with mental health, treatment, and stigma, and a psychiatric field that alternately blames the mother, the environment, and anything/everything in between for this still somewhat mysterious mental illness. I highly recommend. #bookstagram #bookrecommendations #hiddenvalleyroad #mentalhealth #mentalillness #schizophrenia #family
Has a character ever stood out so much to you that Has a character ever stood out so much to you that they felt real?

That’s Rowan Slone for me.

She told me who she was and the lines between imaginary and real became blurred as I wrote her journey.

She has so many reasons to give up and to stop fighting but she never does. She is full of hope and resilience. She is also real, imperfect, and struggles most of the time.

I can’t wait for you to meet her and hear about her journey if you are ready.

Grab her hopeful and often dark journey, through the link in my bio, if you are ready to feel the ups and downs that Rowan’s life is made on.

Do you like stories with dark themes?
I’ve always loved books. From a young age, you I’ve always loved books.

From a young age, you could catch me lugging around an armful of books at any given time, spending many nights buried in a story when I should be sleeping, or hiding in my bathtub for a few stolen precious moments.

Stories have cushioned my life and opened my mind, creating and molding the person I am today.

As a kid, you could catch me reading anything Judy Blume, especially Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret.

As a teen, I would devour Sweet Valley High. In fact, they are still in the attic.

As an adult, some of my favorites now include Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky, The Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor, The Nightingale and Alaska by Kristin Hannah, and The Ramses Series by Christian Jacq. My absolute favorite book would probably be The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley; I’ve read it too many times to count.

Do we have any books in common? What are some of your most beloved books?
Sylvia Plath is an example of someone whose brilli Sylvia Plath is an example of someone whose brilliance was gone too soon because of mental health struggles.

As a mental health therapist, I see these struggles in patients and I just want to remind you that it's ok to get the help you need to live your best life.

Whether you're experiencing good times or bad, life is to be lived. Don't be a passive participant in the journey.

Have you read The Bell Jar?
I guess it’s time for a reintroduction. I’m T I guess it’s time for a reintroduction.

I’m Tracy and here are a few things about me:
-I have a Bachelor’s of Arts in English from WVU, and a Master of Social Work from The Catholic University of America.
-I like to write darkish YA that involves mental health issues.
-I fantasize about renting a tiny apartment in Paris.
-Southern West Virginia is one of my favorite places. I was born and raised in wild, wonderful, mythical, and magical West Virginia but now live in Virginia.
-You might catch me dancing alone to really loud music when no one else is around.
-My beloved childhood pet was a rotten pug named Odus.
-I loath the smell of wet cereal.

Tell me something about you in the comments.
I’m definitely a dog person, though I do love ou I’m definitely a dog person, though I do love our family cats.

When it comes to dogs, they don’t come any better than Lila. Doesn’t that smile just make you happy?

Do you have cats or dogs or both?
While I love the convenience of anything digital, While I love the convenience of anything digital, I'm a pen and paper person at heart; it reminds me of the days when I'd get lost writing in my journal.

I also love a notebook and even have several that have never been written in (I know a lot of fellow writers can relate to that!). And there's just something nice about keeping a paper calendar, too.

Are you a digital or pen and paper kind of person?
When I’m not enjoying my quiet introverted life When I’m not enjoying my quiet introverted life on the weekends, I like having lunch with my daughter (pictured above). We often go out for sushi and then maybe some shopping.

I also like to watch my boys play baseball or spend evenings at dinner with friends or my husband.

Just keep me away from crowds and parties and take me home at a responsible hour so I can get into bed with a good book.

What are your favorite weekend activities?
Who’s read Sweet Valley High? I don’t part wi Who’s read Sweet Valley High?

I don’t part with books unless I am absolutely forced to and these books were a favorite in my teen years so of course they now sit in my attic.

I loved the relatability of the characters and their ability to pretend to be each other was weirdly enviable.

What was a favorite series of yours in your teen years?

What was the seed that made you write your book? What was the seed that made you write your book?

The idea for the Rowan Slone series came to me organically.

I was talking to a friend about someone she knew whose father was a prison guard; she was struggling with her life.

From there, the two lives split. I don’t know what happened to my friend’s friend, but the story of Rowan was born.

She became so real to me that I knew her mannerisms and how she spoke. I got to know my character inside and out.

Tell me about your book beginning or the start of your journey as a reader.

This photo was taken at the West Virginia State Fair in 2015. It's just one of the many wonderful memories I have with her.

Are there any fairs or events your family likes to go to together?

Rowan Slone's life isn't without tragedy. At the Rowan Slone's life isn't without tragedy.

At the age of 10, Rowan's life was turned upside down when an accident resulted in her baby brother's death.

Now at 17, all she wants to do is graduate high school, go to college, and escape her loveless family who holds her responsible for the death of her brother though they don't need to--she blames herself enough already.

Will Rowan find the strength to rise above the burdens that weigh her down? Can she move towards a better future?

Grab your copy of A Life, Refined at the link in my bio to read about Rowan and how she discovers her inner strength. Drop “Rowan” for me to send you a direct link.
